As a result, they are constantly vigilant, realizing that a patient’s status can change drastically at any time.

They should also have critical thinking skills, be able to observe accurately and make decisions accordingly. The ability to think quickly and decisively is important as the nurse anesthetist may be required to formulate a care plan on the spot and have a good rationale for picking a particular course of action. These nurses thrive on challenges and have a high level of self-confidence. They must have faith in their ability to make the right decision and do what needs to be done, especially because the nurse is often faced with situations where second or third opinions are not readily available.

Surgeries can develop into stressful situations, especially when something goes wrong, and sometimes patients die. The nurse anesthetist must be able to handle these situations.
